Executive Summary:
In 2007 there were an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 homeless youth living on L.A. County streets. Of the 1,500 youth who emancipate from the foster care system in Los Angeles and Alameda Counties each year, nearly 50% will be homeless within six-months. Homeless and emancipated foster youth experience disproportionately higher rates of unemployment, lower educational attainment, incarceration, dependence on public assistance, substance abuse, non-marital childbirth and other high-risk behaviors. According to the Local Emergency Shelter Strategy for Los Angeles County, there are only 468 beds, or 3% targeted for unaccompanied youth.
My Mission: To empower youth with programs that will build social skills, communication skills, and alleviate stress and conflict.
My Vision: To see a generation of youth empowered to create better lives. We believe that through our programs the youth we serve will find hope in their situations and reach out for the help that they need to accomplish their dreams, and to see a generation of youth connecting with the world and people around them on an emotional and intellectual level.
There are numerous community centers, youth programs, after school centers, foster care facilities, and churches that provide support to youth who are dealing with the effects of trauma. However, many of these sites acquire inadequate funding to provide consistent programming that teaches practical living skills and emotional understanding and support for trauma. The Peacock Foundation is designed to support existing facilities, struggling to positively affect youth development, in an effort to change the lives of the entire community.
Our programs are designed to fit the needs of the facilities that desire our services. These programs may include components for anger management skills, relational skills, coping skills, conflict resolution skills, and more. We introduce all of these heavy topics through our stimulating methods. This allows us to build a safe, non-threatening, and exciting environment. The goal of the programs is to provide a fun interactive experience that promotes the interaction of children and their peers. We value each program as a new experience to reach children where they are now, and create peer understanding and support.
